Something old, something new, something uniquely you!
Nestled between saying vows, the love and the laughter of a wedding, are wedding traditions - some centuries old, others sweetly modern - that weave in heritage or fun or both!
Let’s wander through the aisle of tradition!
Something old, something new - an old English rhyme, each item represents a good luck charm! Old for continuity, New for optimism, Borrowed for shared happiness and Blue for fidelity.
The ring exchange - circles have no beginning or end, they are a universal symbol of commitment. In ancient Celtic tradition a couple held hands while someone tied string or cord around their hands, symbolising their physical and spiritual unity - where the phrase “tie the knot” comes from! This was done whether or not the couple exchanged rings or not.
Walking down the aisle - stemming back to the days of arranged marriages! A father’s looming presence when walking his daughter down the aisle prevented the groom from backing out! Today this is the brides arrival, her spotlight moment and signifies the start of the ceremony and the start of the journey of marriage.
Unity ceremonies - sand, water, candles, trees, wine or many more. Unity ceremonies are steeped in cultural meaning. These rituals symbolise unity, harmony and the start of a new journey.
Throwing of confetti - dating back to the ancient Greeks who threw branches, leaves, garlands and plants to celebrant returning soldiers, athletes, new married couples and to mourn the dead. The word confetti has Latin origin which gave rise to the Italian word confetti meaning “little sweets”…thrown around at festive events! Confetti as we know it today developed because of silkworms initially - perforated paper placed above silkworm egg trays helped them exit the eggs!
